HALLOWEEN HORROR FILM WEEKEND pt.2

Halloween horror film weekend continues!
THis time with another classic, although perhaps not familiar to all; Polanski's Dance Of Vampires / The Fearless Vampire Killers, from 1967:

More funny than scary, my sisters and I knew this by heart when we were kids and we used to act out the scene at our summerplace with Sarah in the window and Kuckol beneath (out of solidarity to each others we did take turns being the girl or being the hunchback).

Photos from here.

Happy Halloween from Tattoosday!

Here at Tattoosday, we're celebrating Halloween by posting the spookiest tattoo seen in the last month or so. Well, maybe not the spookiest, but certainly the most holiday-related tattoo:

This was offered up by Robert, who I met in Borders Penn Plaza last month. And yes, your eyes are not deceiving you, that is Frankenstein driving a Chevy (that's the stick shift he's gripping). Robert credits Adel at Addiction NYC with this tattoo.

Thanks to Robert for helping us celebrate Halloween here on Tattoosday!

Puma Shoes

Puma AG Rudolf Dassler Sport, officially branded as PUMA, is a major German multinational company that produces high-end athletic shoes, lifestyle footwear and other sportswear. Formed in 1924 as Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik by Adolf and Rudolf Dassler, relationships between the two brothers deteriorated until the two agreed to split in 1948, forming two separate entities, Adidas and Puma. Puma is currently based in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

Elegant Black and White Puma

The company is known for its football shoes and has sponsored acclaimed footballers, including Pelé, Eusébio, Johan Cruijff, Enzo Francescoli, Diego Maradona, Lothar Matthäus, Kenny Dalglish, Didier Deschamps and Gianluigi Buffon. Puma is also the sponsor of the Jamaican track athlete Usain Bolt. In the United States, the company is probably best known for the suede basketball shoe it introduced in 1968, which eventually bore the name of New York Knicks basketball star Walt "Clyde" Frazier, and for its endorsement partnership with Joe Namath.

Puma Shoes Black and White Edition

Following the split from his brother, Rudolf Dassler originally registered the new-established company as Ruda, but later changed to Puma.[3]:31 Puma's earliest logo consisted of a square and beast jumping through a D, which was registered, along with the company's name, in 1948. Puma's shoe designs feature the distinctive "Formstripe",[3]:33 with clothing and other products having the logo printed on them.

The company also offers lines shoes and sports clothing, designed by Lamine Kouyate, Amy Garbers and others. Since 1996 Puma has intensified its activities in the United States. Puma owns 25% of American brand sports clothing maker Logo Athletic, which is licensed by American professional basketball and association football leagues. Since 2007 Puma AG has been part of the French luxury group PPR.

Ashlee Channels Snow White

This work in progress is on Ashlee's arm:

The tattoo features Snow White at the top of the arm, with the witch's hand proffering an apple, wrapping around the arm:

Ashlee explained that the tattoo is commenting on how superficial the world is and how the idea of Beauty was the downfall of the title character, at least until she was rescued from her poison-induced slumber.

The tattoo is the work of Eric at King Pin Tattoos in Harker Heights, Texas. Work from Kingpin appeared previously in August 2008 on Tattoosday here.

Thanks to Ashlee for sharing her work with us here on Tattoosday!

HALLOWEEN HORROR FILM WEEKEND pt.1

It's Halloween weekend and I am away from home in rather un-halloweeny circumstances. But at least I will be wearing a black dress... (Uuuuh, spooky). So I thought I'd get us all in the Halloween mood with some good ol' horror movies!

I am a big fan of horror movies. In fact, I have most likely watched too many. I can still bear being home a lone as long as I have the safety lock on (although I do freeze for a moment if the cats react to some sounds in the staircase). But I can't drive out to Eddi's farm on the un-lit winding roads trough the dark (we're talking really dark) woods and mist filled fields without being sure I'll catch a zombie in my headlights at some point. (Or then I just think of Twin Peaks and Bob!). And it freaks me out that Eddi does not lock the door there at night. (Of course, he is not aware of all the serial killers running around in the world as he is sure the area is only full on southwest Finnish farmers.) And you can of course imagine what I come up with when I'm on the night shift and the last ones to leave our part of the harbor, with the dark warehouse and long corridors in the building. I have totally mind fucked myself. But I can't stop watching.

Old horror films however brings up a different kind of scary and do not play a part in the fact that I might hurry a little on my last steps out of a dark room. Films from back in the days may not come out as frightening as the horror movies of today are or freak us out in the dame way, the elements of fear are in most cases more subtle and less raw than those of today. But the old films do create an ambience of spookiness and haunting darkness that I love, especially silent films. And the scariest vampire of all time is of course Nosferatu.

Here are some classics to get you in a Halloween mood:

Robert Wiene's Dr.Caligari, 1920

F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu, 1922

Tod Browning's Freaks, 1932

At least the two first ones can be sen as a whole on youtube.

Nesting Dolls and a Zombie, Courtesy of Kristin

Last month, I ran into Kristin at the Penn Plaza Borders store.

She has ten tattoos, but the piece on her shin was the first one I spotted:

These Russian nesting dolls represents the friendship Kristin has with her friend Kyle (thus, the merging of their names into "Kryle").

It was tattooed by Bret from Electric Tattoo in Pasadena, Maryland.

Kristin also shared another tattoo, one certainly more appropriate for our current season. Check out this amazing tattoo:

This cool zombie piece was inked by Kike Castillo at Timmy Tattoo in Huntington, New York.

Kristin says that Kike is one of her favorite artists and she is happy for him to provide her with great body art. "He needed someone," she told me, referring to this particular tattoo, and "I'm always game". Tattoo artists love clients that let them do their thing, and you can tell with this great piece of art.

Thanks to Kristin for sharing her cool tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

Brian Littrell Tattoos

Brian Littrell is an American singer-songwriter, known as a member of the music group Backstreet Boys, and for albums such as Millennium and Black & Blue.

Brian Littrell has been spotted with a couple of tattoos, including a religious masterpiece on his left shoulder which contains a cross with clouds and sunbeams, the saying "Rock of Ages", along with an angel head and wings.

His other tattoo is an armband of lyrics reading "It was the 15th of June when she walked in my life, it was the first time someone said hello with her eyes".

Amanda's Phoenix

Amanda has two tattoos, one of which she shared with me at the end of August in the Penn Plaza Borders store.

This is the tattoo she designed:

Amanda was inspired by the "compelling mythology of phoenixes" and had Bobby at Modern Age Tattoo in Nanuet, New York, translate the design into the final product.

The quote, in Latin, "post tenebras lux" means "After darkness, light". This mirrors the life cycle of the mythological phoenix who dies, bound in flame, only to be reborn from the ashes. Clicking here will display the vast array of phoenixes that have appeared on Tattoosday previously.

In other words, even when things appear their darkest, affirmation is just within reach.

Thanks to Amanda for sharing this cool tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

SWANS AND NATURE

The beautiful colours from a few weeks back have now fallen off the trees and are on the ground instead, most of the branches are bare. Which is beautiful still, only a different kind of beautiful.

Biking trough the park into town is like biking trough a small piece of nature documentary each and every time; fasans strutting about, squirrels munching on cones (Eddi hates squirrels but I still find them pretty cute, although I know they eat bird babies) and lots of small little birdies whose names I learned in school but cannot recall anymore. Every single time I curse not bridging my camera along.

Last week however I happened to carry it and took some photos of the swan couple that has been haning around here lately.

I find the fact that swans are monogamous romantic, although I know that it's only nature and features of a species. A few summers back however we had a crazy killer swan hanging around our island in the archipelago, attacking others. There was also a lone mother and her swan baby. One day the male swan attacked the mother. We interfered with nature by driving the male swan away but then he returned and drowned the mother by keeping her head under water while the little baby swan went all peep-peep next to them. Nature is cruel, but I didn't know birds did that, whatever the reason was... and now I made everyone feel bad, myself at least, the story always makes me cry a little bit, while this post was meant to be more of a feelgood one.

Oh, ignore it, just think of the nice park and loving swans instead OK.
